Spells: A number of spells are usually available to magic-using characters, the most common including fire, blizzard, thunder, and cure. A series of standard suffixes denotes increasing power; for example, fire is the basic elemental fire spell; fira and firaga are increasingly powerful versions. These suffixes have been present in every Japanese game except Final Fantasy II, but were only adopted in the English localisations after Final Fantasy VIII.

The handheld is unique in that it has two screens (almost all games consoles have one) and also that it incorporates a touch screen (the first console to feature this since Tiger's Game.com). Nintendo hopes that the new features present in the machine will provoke unique game development, attract developers, appeal to both older gamers and non-gamers alienated by normal input methods, and allow Nintendo to retain its status as leader of the handheld game console market.

The entire game was fully voiced with an unprecedented amount of quality voice acting talent. The majority of the game's dialogue takes place in radio conversations between Solid Snake(Akio Otsuka/David Hayter) and other characters in the drama. The player was also free to initiate additional Codec calls during gameplay, which allowed the player to pick up additional details outside of the core storyline.
